AC/DC JOHNSON BACKS DEMENTIA CHARITY

Singer surprises staff just weeks after Malcolm Young's illness is confirmed
Brian Johnson has given his support to a dementia charity in the North East of England.
The AC/DC frontman got in touch with Sporting Memories Network – which is based near Thirsk, North Yorkshire – after his bandmate Malcolm Young was diagnosed with dementia.
Sporting Memories Network uses sports stories to engage older people, and in particular men, suffering from dementia, and involve them in groups which improve their physical and mental wellbeing.
North East native Johnson recounted his memories of being unable to afford to attend Newcastle United matches and walking three miles with his father's mining stool to catch a glimpse of the action.
The charity's director Tony Jameson-Allen tells the Northern Echo: "It's an absolutely amazing boost for a charity run by two people to receive a phone call from the singer of a group that has sold more than 200 million records worldwide.
Johnson's support could prove vital to the charity, which is facing a funding crisis. Visit sportingmemoriesnetwork.com to find out more about their work.
Malcolm Young is being cared for in an Australian nursing home and he did not take part in recording sessions for the band's upcoming new album Rock Or Bust.

BRIAN MAY SHARES ONE NIGHT IN HELL

Queen guitarist speaks to Classic Rock about his devilish new animated film.
Brian May has teamed up with animation/production company Unanico Group to create an animated film titled One Night In Hell.
The short, set to premiere in the UK on Sky 3D and Sky Arts on Halloween night, is based upon May's personal collection of Diableries, a set of stereoscopic cards published in France from the early 1860s which feature visions of the underworld. Together with historians Paula Fleming and Denis Pellerin, May published a book titled Diableries: Stereoscopic Adventures in Hell in 2013, and One Night in Hellrepresents the guitarist's newest attempt to bring the devils, skeletons and demons depicted in the cards to life.
Classic Rock spoke with May ahead of the film's world premiere in London to hear more about this diabolical project...
The Diableries cards are clearly very close to your heart: would you care to explain the fascination the collection holds for you?
“Well, Diableries have been part of my life for nearly 50 years, since I first found one on a Portobello Road market stall, and I've continued to seek them out wherever I go in the world. When we put together the Diableries book last year we managed to track down 181 of the known 182 cards in existence, and they present this wonderful, satirical vision of Napoleon III's reign via these images of the underworld.”
And did you approach the animators with the idea of bringing the cards to life?
“No, the book did its work, in that it got people really fascinated with this world, and Paul Laikin from Unanico got in touch with me originally because he'd seen the book and found the visuals so inspiring. We immediately realised that we both spoke the same language, and both shared a passion for these things, and it all happened very quickly after that: it was only a year ago that we first spoke.”
Could you give us a short plot summary of One Night In Hell?
“I don't want to give too much away, but it's basically a day in the life of Satan in Hell. It's very tongue-in-cheek, because that's what the Diableries were – they started as a rather stern depiction of the religious teachings of the time, but evolved into a parody of those teachings, and into quite a hard and vicious satire on the regime of the day: it's amazing that they got away with it. In the film we've mainly concentrated on the personalities of the characters in the cards, and the thread through the film is this one little guy who arrives in Hell with a strange little suitcase under his arm, and it's about his journey through various rooms in Hell.”
Did you help storyboard the film?
“Well we spent quite a bit of time just looking at the original cards and discussing what could be done, and then they went off and story-boarded it based on some of these visuals. We've been very closely in touch all the way along, and it's been a very nice interaction. Watching things develop and evolve was quite amazing. The music then developed alongside the images. I had an idea of combining We Will Rock Youwith a section of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, a piece of music that seemed incredibly appropriate since it was composed for the first Napoleon, and by the time we reached the regime of Napoleon III, the period in which the Diableries were produced, it would have been forbidden for that piece of music to be played in Paris. There's a rebel guitarist in the movie, and I've done a bit of guitar in my time, so I found myself on my way to Prague to perform the 1812 with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra in a slightly different way than it's ever been done before. I'm really happy with how it's all turned out.”
Is there a possibility that you might expand upon this idea to create a longer film?
“Yes, I think we're all keen on the idea of a feature film, and we already have a little bit of a masterplan. This film is very much kept in the format of a Victorian stereo card viewer – you're looking through a frame most of the time, until near the end when you're propelled into a bigger universe – so obviously if we attempt a feature film, we'll be able to expand into a bigger virtual space, and the possibilities are very exciting.”
Are the challenges of these sort of collaborations important to you as a musician and artist?
“Absolutely. I love being challenged in different scenarios. Obviously we've come a long way with Queen - and both Roger [Taylor] and I went through a period where we didn't really want to be associated with Queen, because it just didn't seem right without Freddie – but beyond our musical universe it's always interesting to stretch out. I've done a lot of projects outside Queen over the years: when people throw me a challenge it's always stimulating. I get asked to do all kinds of things, usually for charity, most recently for the BBC's recreation of the Beach Boys' God Only Knows. Everyone thinks they know that song from childhood, but actually you don't know it until you go in and play it, and you realise what a strange and wonderful piece of music it is. All through my career I've loved to step into new situations, whether playing with Black Sabbath years ago or a more recent session with Dappy, the rapper.”
Do you think that sometimes this very openness is sometimes held against you? Music critics who might venerate Sheer Heart Attack, say, might wonder what possessed you to do, say, The Stonk, with Hale and Pace...
“Yeah, they might hold it against me. But a challenge is a challenge, and music is music. I have no snobbery about my interest in how any music works, whether that be my work with Bad News to collaborations with the soul singer Jeffrey Osborne. I don't make any apology for having a Number 1 single with The Stonk, that raised a lot of money for Comic Relief. I never regret things I've done, I would only regret opportunities that might have passed me by. So, I mean, fuck those critics, fuck them if they can't take it!” [Laughs]

GILMOUR HAS ‘NO ROOM’ FOR FLOYD IN HIS FUTURE

David turns thoughts to solo album and tour - and won’t rule out appearing with Waters again
David Gilmour says there’s no room for Pink Floyd in his future, and he’s turning his full attention to a solo album, which he hopes to release next year.
And he won’t rule out the possibility of appearing on stage with Roger Waters again.
He’s already said upcoming Floyd record The Endless River, due on November 10, is almost certainly their last.
Now Gilmour tells Rolling Stone: “I’m really enjoying my life and my music – there’s no room for Pink Floyd. The thought of doing any more causes me to break out in a cold sweat.”
He says of the follow-up to 2006 solo title On An Island: “It’s coming along very well. There are some sketches that aren’t finished and some will be started again. There’s a few months work in it yet; I’m hoping to get it out this following year. Then I’m hoping to do an old man’s tour, not a 200-date sort of thing.”
Gilmour last appeared with former bandmate Waters in London in 2011. Asked if he could be talked into another reunion, he says: “I wouldn’t rule anything out. But the likelihood of it being anything more than one little charity show is very, very remote.”
He adds that the idea of bringing Waters in for The Endless River was a non-starter. “Why on earth anyone thinks what we do now would have anything to do with him is a mystery to me,” Gilmour states. “Roger is very used to being the sole power behind his career. Coming into something that has any democracy about it – he wouldn’t be good at that.
“Besides, I was in my 30s when Roger left. I’m 68 now; it’s over half a lifetime away. We really don’t have that much in common any more.”

QUEEN'S RHAPSODY TOP SONG FOR SICK

1975 classic beats ABBA track for healing power in poll
Queen classic Bohemian Rhapsody has topped a poll of songs with the power to heal.
The 1975 hit was named most likely to make people feel better when they were sick or unhappy in a vote by 1000 people commissioned by the BBC.
ABBA’s Dancing Queen came second and classical music in general came joint third with Pharrel Williams’ Happy. The Beatles, Bob Marley, Elvis and Frank Sinatra also appeared in the top 10.
More than 66% of people said music helped them through periods of illness or stress. More men than women voted for Bohemian Rhapsody, while more women than men voted for ABBA.
The BBC say: “Music can’t cure an illness or alter a disability – but it can help people cope with the difficulties they face. When you participate in music it can bring physical benefits, but it can also affect the way you think and feel.
“Everyone has the ability to respond to music and sound which can alter our way of moving, our mood and our perceptions.”
Taken from Queen album A Night At The Opera, the single was the most expensive ever made at the time and has become the third best-selling in UK chart history. In 2012 it was voted the most-loved number one song of all time.
Guitarist Brian May recently told how Freddie Mercury had approved the song’s appearance in comedy movie Wayne’s World just before his death.

Top 10 songs with healing power

  1. Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody
  2. ABBA: Dancing Queen
  3. Pharell Williams: Happy
  4. Classical music
  5. The Beatles: Let It Be
  6. Bob Marley: Three Little Birds
  7. Robbie Williams: Angels
  8. Michael Jackson: Billie Jean
  9. Elvis Presley: The Wonder Of You

MUSE BRING IN PRODUCER LANGE FOR 7TH ALBUM

AC/DC, Def Leppard and Nickelback man Mutt masterminding follow-up to The 2nd Law
Muse have confirmed they’re working with producer Robert John ‘Mutt’ Lange on their seventh album.
He’s best known for his work on AC/DC’s Back In Black, Def Leppard’s Hysteria and Nickelback’s Dark Horse, among many others.
Muse say: “We are honoured to be making our new album with this legendary producer. #backinblack"
The trio began work on the follow-up to 2012’s The 2nd Law earlier this year, with frontman Matt Bellamy reporting they were aiming to achieve a “more basic” sound and adding: “It’s gonna get heavy.”
He said: “We focused on things like synthesizers, drum machines and stuff. On this next album, we're going to veer back towards musicianship again: guitar, bass and drums. It's probably going to be a bit of a rawer album, and definitely a bit more rock, I'd say."
Drummer Dominic Howard later said they doubted the album would be launched during 2014. “If we can get something out that would be great – but definitely next

CREAM ICON BRUCE DEAD AT 71

Bassist and vocalist Jack’s passing confirmed after hoax rumours - as Ginger Baker says "Goodbye my friend"
Jack Bruce
Cream icon Jack Bruce has died at the age of 71, his family have announced.
The bassist and vocalist had been the victim of a series of hoax announcements about his passing in recent days, but it’s now been confirmed. It’s believed he succumbed to liver disease.
A brief statement on his official website, Facebook page and Twitter account says: “It is with great sadness that we, Jack’s family, announce the passing of our beloved Jack: husband, father, granddad, and all round legend. The world of music will be a poorer place without him, but he lives on in his music and forever in our hearts.”
The statement has been supported by publicist Claire Singers, who says: “He died today at his home in Suffolk, surrounded by his family.”
Bruce formed Cream with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker in 1966 and recorded four genre-defining albums before splitting two years later. They were the first-ever band to achieve platinum sales for Wheels Of Fire.
The relationship between Bruce and drummer Baker was notoriously stormy, with several violent episodes on record. The trio reunited in 1993 and 2005, but further gathering were ruled out on a number of occasions by all three members.
Baker said this evening: "A very sad day. Goodbye my friend."
Bruce released his first album in a decade, Silver Rails earlier this year, featuring Phil Manzanera, Uli Jon Roth, Robin Trower, Bernie Marsden and others.

OZZY: BEING IN A BAND IS DYING ART

Computer age means modern musicians can’t jam, says Sabbath frontman
Ozzy Osbourne says the rise of technology in music means bands are losing the ability to jam and shape ideas together.
And the Black Sabbath icon – who's the subject of a free TeamRock iPad supplement– has first-hand experience of the phenomenon.
Ozzy tells Noisey.com: “The computer age is taking over and there's a lot of trickery. I've actually seen guys in bands. You go, 'Do you want to jam?' and they go, 'Jam? What's that?' Just playing anything together. They can't do it. 'I'll have to consult my computer first.' The art of being in a band is dying.”
The singer says he's always proud when another musician is influenced by Sabbath – and he doesn't just mean by the music.
He says: “I have people at Ozzfest going, 'Man, if it wasn't for Sabbath... we owe you so much.' I go, 'What part of this is influenced by Sabbath?' I get where they're coming from but it's not the music, it's what it says to the people.
“Metal has never had any rules. If you want me to do something, tell me not to. I've never played by any rules. My sole concern is to get on that stage and give the audience a great day out. I want to give my heart and soul when I play, and that's God's honest truth.”

Bono reveals the real reason he wears sunglasses all the time

Bono’s hair style and fondness for cowboy hats may have changed over the years, but one part of his style has remained consistent: his sunglasses. However, as the U2frontman revealed during an interview on BBC’s The Graham Norton Show, his eyewear has more to do with his health than fashion.
“This is a good place to explain to people that I’ve had glaucoma for the last 20 years,” Bono told Norton. If gone untreated, glaucoma can lead to blindness. However, Bono stressed, “I have good treatments and I am going to be fine.”
Later, he quipped, “You’re not going to get this out of your head now and you will be saying, ‘Ah, poor old blind Bono.’”
